Artist Statement

There’s a certain magic to be found in our built environment—where edges meet, light and colors converge, and surfaces create textures and patterns.

One freezing cold day when I was very small, a pipe burst in the ceiling of our little apartment. I’m sure my family was quite alarmed, but I was too young to be concerned and instead found it curious and fascinating. Water was leaking out everywhere—filling the overhead light fixtures and oozing from wall switches and outlets. Then, after a few weeks, cracks started to appear, and the painted plaster began to discolor and peel. I can remember lying in bed, enjoying the interesting designs and connections I could find in the decay up above.

That childhood experience set me on a lifelong obsession, searching for interesting abstract shapes, contrasts, and structural details that pique our curiosity, inviting our eyes to journey through and beyond.

The art I make today is an attempt to capture the audacity and ambition of this phenomena—both observed, and also through abstract creations of my own imagination. It’s a rediscovery of who I am, rooted in the past, but always looking forward, eager to see what’s next and where the next intersection might lead.

Artist Biography

Allan Gorman’s artworks have been exhibited in numerous museums, art fairs, and commercial galleries throughout the US and Europe

The artist is a two-time recipient of The New Jersey State Council on the Arts Fellowship for Painting; resident fellowships at the Vermont Studio Center and ESKFF at Mana Contemporary, the Salmagundi Award from the American Artist’s Professional League, and the Pioneer of Realism award from the International Guild of Realism.

His work is part of the permanent collections of the Savoy Automobile Museum, Belskie Museum of Art, and the Copelouzos Family Art Museum in Athens, Greece. Gorman’s art can also be found in many corporate and private collections.
