Artist Statement
I was a woodblock print artist, but one day I suddenly started creating generative art using programming. How would the existing things inside me and the new foreign objects that entered me mix? In the process, this work was born, probably by chance.
For me, carving wood is about carving the time I have existed, and it is an act of transcending the past and future. Thinking about algorithms on a program is co-creation with a computer, and sometimes produces unintended shapes. And no two are ever the same.
I think that humans and life are a kind of algorithm. In this work, I carved a unique randomly generated “shape” to connect it to the real world, generate something with new meaning, and at the same time explore what humans can do.
Artist Biography
mole^3 (mole cubed) is a Japan-based printmaker and visual artist who creates works using open data, images, sound, and generative art, as well as woodblock prints.
She views coding as a form of printmaking and on-screen outputs the equivalent of physical prints. In this way, her work develops an expanded understanding of printmaking. She considers the method of converting and exhibiting woodblock rather than print as a form of “extension of printmaking”.
