Artist Biography
Freddie Jen Cohen is a Canadian American living in the forest outside of Bellingham, Washington by way of Lake Charles, Louisiana, and Los Angeles, California. She received a BFA from Loyola Marymount University in 2005 and an MFA from Art Center College of Design in 2008. Not long after completing her MFA she abandoned a formal art practice and the art world, and committed to living a life of experiential research for many years. Beneath the surface was the burgeoning disease of addiction. Over time, she experienced frustrated fits and starts with art projects; all along taking photos, but stashing the negatives away. It was not until sobriety found Freddie Jen in 2017 that she was able to step toward authentically creating art again. A several month long severe bout of vertigo in 2019 led her to make a series of small meditative paintings, and in it she was revived of the need to create. Since 2022 she has rededicated herself to her art practice, having reestablished a healthy relationship to her process and work. Her art practice is comprised of photography, video, performance, painting, and sculptural installation. It is a meeting ground for the visceral, corporeal, emotions, and mind.
