Artist Biography
I am an artist from St. Albert, Alberta, working in Ottawa, Ontario. Being Metis-Japanese-Canadian (or Metis-Nikkei), I humbly explore mixed identity, culture, and try to bring value to my communities through authentic representations of traditional aspects and honest depictions of my personal experience. I love exploring nature and its personification; you will see lots of nudity as an expression of my amusement and appreciation, alongside darker contemplations of mortality and time. My tenets of creation center around honoring art and the process. Growing up in St. Albert, I was consistently in art classes, which culminated in taking university art courses in painting and drawing. I went on to complete a BA in Psychology and Philosophy, and my art business, Mia Ohki Illustrations, opened in 2016. I have completed approximately 200+ logo, tattoo, video & illustration commissions through my work as a freelance artist. Opportunities have ranged from radio interviews to keynote speeches, from traditional mediums (illustration, paint, and sculpture) to social media collaborations and digital design. Recently, I have had the opportunities to be a peer assessor, a guest art instructor and workshop leader, which feels like a beautiful evolution.
