Artist Statement

Solar activity plays a crucial role both in the context of planetary evolution and development and in our daily lives on Earth. The Sun influences the climate, atmosphere, and biosphere, determining the habitability of planets.

The sculpture helps visualize and comprehend this invisible yet powerful force that drives numerous processes on Earth. It translates solar activity data into a dynamic sculpture, making cosmic weather—solar wind, flares, and coronal mass ejections — visible to the human eye.

When the Sun releases powerful streams of energy, they reach Earth, triggering what we call geomagnetic storms. These phenomena cause fluctuations in Earth’s magnetic field, which can disrupt satellites, electronics, and power grids. Geomagnetic storms can also impact human well-being: atmospheric heating, pressure changes, and the connection between our biological rhythms and Earth’s magnetic field and ionosphere can cause discomfort for some individuals.

The sculpture is designed as a giant star, constructed from bamboo and illuminated elements. It glows, pulsates, and emits sound, reflecting variations in solar activity. At the core of the sculpture is a program, which tracks real-time space weather using data from specialized APIs. The program analyzes key parameters of the solar wind — speed, temperature, and density — as well as the probability of solar flares, transforming this information into an evolving sound composition.

The project invites us to contemplate the deep connection between the Sun, nature, and humanity, reminding us that Earth is merely a small part of an immense cosmic system.

Artist Biography

SPLACES.STUDIO is an interdisciplinary collective of artists, programmers, and engineers working at the intersection of art, science, and technology. The studio creates large-scale immersive sculptures and installations that connect human perception with surrounding natural environments. Their practice is grounded in the idea of nature-driven technologies — artistic systems inspired by the self-regulating logic of living ecosystems. Through light, sound, and data, SPLACES reinterprets natural phenomena to deepen empathy and environmental awareness.

Each project is site-specific and developed with sensitivity to its local context, ecology, and community. Since 2023, the studio has realized more than ten large-scale installations across Europe, Asia, and North America, often in collaboration with scientists, engineers, and researchers. Their works draw on biomorphic and ecological design, referencing natural cycles, flora, and fauna, while encouraging participatory and sensory engagement. Audiences can influence light, sound, or motion, becoming part of the system itself.
