Artist Profile Chandler Cheng
Chandler Cheng, Augmented Limb — The Art of Human Augmentation, 2022,
3D printed interactive sculpture.
Artist Statement
Ever wondered what it would be like to have an extra limb to help you navigate the cosmos? Chandler’s Augmented Limb is here to turn that wonder into reality. This innovative robotic tail, inspired by the agile movements of snakes and the sturdy structure of dinosaur tails, reimagines how astronauts move in zero gravity.
Chandler’s project isn’t just about solving practical issues in space; it’s a bold speculative venture into how we might evolve our bodies for extraterrestrial environments. Imagine astronauts zipping through space stations, gracefully anchored by a tail that adjusts to their every move. This vision goes beyond utility, questioning and expanding our understanding of human capabilities.
The Augmented Limb was crafted through meticulous design iterations using 3D printing technology. It underwent rigorous strength testing to ensure it can withstand strong impacts and the harsh conditions of space.
This project pushes the boundaries of how we perceive our bodies. By augmenting our physical form, we open up possibilities for enhanced human performance in extreme environments. It invites us to ponder: what other enhancements could make us more adaptable, resilient, and capable as we venture further into the unknown?
Chandler’s Augmented Limb is more than a tool; it’s a speculative leap towards a future where human anatomy is dynamically enhanced by technology.
