Artist Statement
Hide and Seek holds a gentle rhythm. The pleasure of noticing what appears, losing it for a moment, and then finding it again. There is no urgency here, only curiosity. The work invites the eye to wander, to discover what is tucked away, and to enjoy the small delight of seeing something reappear when you were not quite expecting it.
Artist Biography
Debbie Garratt is an Australian intuitive abstract painter whose work explores inner experience, uncertainty, and the spaces that sit beneath language. She began painting as a form of self-therapy during a period when words were no longer sufficient, and continues to work without a plan, allowing colour, movement, and layered process to guide each piece.
Her practice is shaped by a lifelong engagement with human experience and meaning-making. Alongside her visual art, she is a writer and educator with a doctoral degree in communication and Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees in health and education, and has spent decades working with people in reflective and relational contexts. This influences her sensitivity to ambiguity, emotional depth, and the unseen aspects of experience that surface through her painting.
Her work is process-led and intuitive, with meaning emerging slowly, if at all. Rather than offering explanation or narrative, her paintings invite attention to what is often unseen, giving form to inner worlds and leaving space for the viewer’s own response.
