Artist Statement
“Alala” means Hawaiian crow, which has been extinct or on the verge of extinction for years. In the last few months a few were released into the wild again. This painting is part of a series of paper and ink work that has been about the inner spirit we nurture in times of societal and cultural challenges.
Artist Biography
Janice Nakashima has been a studio artist in Northern California where she has lived most of her life. Reflected in her work are issues of environment, refugees, homelessness, and also nurturing the spirit with music, art, and meditative practices.
