Artist Statement
This is a piece of work that emerged during my period of low spirits. The sculpture The Goddess of Victory (The Victory of Samos) really left a profound impression on me. I couldn’t describe it with words, but at that time, I was under the oppression of the family’s path and couldn’t make the right choice. I was struggling. Coincidentally, at that time, I saw this statue. When I was very young, I visited the Louvre, but now my state of mind is completely different from then. When I saw it again, I was truly overwhelmed. The broken statue gave me a special understanding. I was moved and wanted to express this emotion. During the initial stage of my painting, I fixed on the colors of bright red, sky blue, blue-violet, and finally added green and titanium white for embellishment. My idea was that the red in the background expressed that passionate feeling, and in contrast with the blue-violet of the main subject, it brought in a bit of the mystery of the statue. This is the first entry work of my artistic career. I really like it.
Artist Biography
My name is Jim Zhang. I am a young contemporary artist of Chinese nationality. Currently, I am completing my undergraduate studies in Filmmaking at NYFA in Los Angeles. My creative works cover painting, sculpture, and video. I am skilled at using colors to depict my mood and emotions. Becoming an artist is my dream, and fortunately, through my persistent efforts, I have regained my right to make my own life choices and have rediscovered my true self. I am very fortunate. I once struggled extremely, but at this moment, I still haven’t deviated from my path, just like my first entry-level art piece.
