Artist Statement

In What Blue Are You?, I explore the dichotomy between the synthetic and the natural, embodied by the contrast of blue screens against the expanse of the sky. This piece reflects our contemporary obsession with technology, represented by the vivid, artificial aqua and the stark yellow caution square. The yellow square serves as a reminder of the alerts and warnings we often encounter in the digital realm, juxtaposing the freedom and fluidity of natural elements.

Employing varying brushstrokes, washes, drips, and heavy applications of paint, I create a textured landscape that invites the viewer to engage with the work on multiple levels. The flowing strokes of blue signify the vastness of the sky and our innate desire to connect with nature, while the pastel pink undertone acts as a metaphorical paint roller, attempting to overlay and mask the complexity of our experiences with a veneer of simplicity. It represents the struggle to cover up the chaos that often accompanies modern life, echoing the challenges of finding authenticity in a predominantly digital world.

Through this painting, I invite viewers to question their relationship with technology and the environment. What shades of blue resonate with you? Are they the serene tones of the sky or the captivating glow of a screen? This work embodies the push and pull of our existence—between the allure of artificiality and the necessity of embracing the raw beauty of the world around us.
