Artist Statement
There’s something quietly powerful about peeling back layers of material, of memory, of meaning. In Layers of the Land, I work with reclaimed cardboard, cut, selected, and composed to create a circular form with three distinct bands. The lace-like upper edge was formed by moulding cardboard, while the middle and lower sections are repurposed fragments, arranged with intention. There’s a quiet tension in how these parts meet: softness above, structure in the centre, and weight below. The piece is framed, yet it breathes. It shifts with the light, its shadows changing throughout the day, never fixed, like the whenua (land) itself. That central section may evoke tangata whenua, the people of the land, though the reading is left open, as land holds many stories. I’m interested in transformation, how overlooked materials can be shaped into something reverent. This work shows simplicity, stillness, and the slow uncovering of form. It is an invitation to look at the creation of shadows behind the light and form.
Artist Biography
Lucie Anderson is a contemporary artist based in Napier, Aotearoa New Zealand, creating tactile, contemplative works that explore the tension between control and surrender. Using reclaimed materials like corrugated cardboard and fluid mediums such as alcohol ink, she crafts pieces that are grounded in nature and guided by intuition. Her practice is a response to the rhythms of the land, light, and inner emotional landscapes. Each artwork is a meditation on erosion, memory, fragility, and form. Whether through luminous, flowing colour or intricate hand-carved texture, Lucie invites viewers into a space of stillness and subtle transformation. Born in Belgium and now deeply rooted in the landscapes of New Zealand, Lucie’s work reflects a quiet strength and emotional clarity. She has exhibited nationally, received National and International art awards recognition, and continues to develop a practice that honours material honesty, emotional resonance, and the quiet power of form.
