Artist Statement

The three aspects of this illuminated sculpture explore luminescence as a moment of revelation. Referencing the transformative power of metamorphosis, this work evokes the moment of a chrysalis’ delicate rupture, revealing the luminous vibrance of a newly emerging butterfly. As light passes through the sculpture’s form, it mimics the ethereal glow of luminous wings unfurling into a new existence, illuminating the space with a soft yet vibrant radiance. Through this work, I seek to capture the ephemeral beauty of transformation—those brief, delicate, yet powerful, moments when life shifts from one state to another, and the once hidden becomes visible, radiant, and free.

Artist Biography

Sharon Howard, a Florida-based artist (age 72) creates illuminated sculptures using harvested branches and vines, covered in vibrant Japanese washi paper—a kaleidoscope of swirling pigments dancing across its textured surface. Trained in traditional lamp-making techniques in Japan, she blends this craftsmanship with natural materials to capture the radiance of light. Each piece is carefully constructed to allow light to filter through the washi paper, creating a glowing, ethereal effect. Her work explores the harmony between nature, shifts of light, and shadow, with a focus on evoking a sense of serenity and mystery. Through her sculptures, Sharon Howard seeks to express the fleeting, radiant quality of light in a unique and meditative way.
