Artist Statement

Ephemeral I is, at first glance, utterly fragile, yet it holds a curious power, inviting us to ponder the limits of form. In this piece, Yujie Yang captures a fleeting instant, as if time paused mid-splash, where movement is harnessed through careful craftsmanship in a single, crystalline form.

Through an intuitive process, molten glass was shaped without preliminary plans, each piece melted and manipulated in response to the material’s natural flow and gravity. This spontaneous approach becomes integral to the work itself, mirroring the theme of “ephemerality”. Like a splash frozen in time, it preserves the chaotic beauty of fluid dynamics in solid form.

The crystalline tendrils appear to dance, defying gravity, as if refusing to accept their own limitations. This tension between fragility and resilience speaks to something deeply human—our desire to preserve fleeting experiences while acknowledging their temporary nature. Yang’s sculpture stands not as an attempt to defeat time, but as a celebration of moments made visible, inviting viewers to ponder the delicate balance between impermanence and preservation.

The work becomes a metaphor for our collective yearning to transcend boundaries, where fragility transforms from liability into a source of unexpected strength. Through glass, we witness how something seemingly delicate can hold profound power, suggesting that true resilience often lies in embracing rather than denying our own ephemeral nature.
